Heading Off The Beaten Track – Copenhagen
On our holidays, heading off the beaten track is something most of us would really like to do. Famous tourist spots, often located in famous places, have been overexposed to us that it has come to a point where actually seeing them in person has become tiresome. Depending on what time of the year you choose to visit, some of these major destinations may end up causing you more hassle than what they’re worth. During peak times, especially during school breaks, most of these tourist destinations get booked up in minutes, and even the queues can end up long and unrelenting. All these may only be worth it if you’ve been wanting to visit an attraction for a long time already. It may be better for you to slightly go off the beaten track if you would like a more authentic experience of a place you have chosen to visit. Lately, Copenhagen has become one of the most famous holiday destinations, which makes it a great example.
You have struck gold with Freetown Christiania if getting out of regular civilization and seeing how other people live is something you like to do. Not far from the Copenhagen city center, it is an alternative hippy commune which was set up in the 70s by a group of like-minded people. After coming to an agreement in 2011, the authorities have chosen to leave Christiania alone despite the original opposition from the past. The small town is car-free and you will also not be allowed to buy a house there; you will have to apply for it, and pass a certain criteria which will be given to you. There is always plenty going on out there, from brilliant street food, a local market and even great live music.
Nowhere in the whole world could do it better than Vesterbro, as fars as artsy and quirky neighborhoods can go. This area, located in the southwest of the city, was once known for being a heavily working class neighborhood and was even famed for its red-light district! This time, however, it is known as a hip and trendy place full of independent cafes, easteries and attractions. There are numbers of excellent places that you can stay in, so if you are seeking for hotels in Copenhagen, Denmark, look no further! You just have to spend a bit of time walking through the streets and seeing what you can come across.
